the more you ignore me, the - I HAVE UPDATED MIKEYNET

How ace would it have been for Morrissey to do Eurovision? This is how ace: 500% ace. So the fact that he's not makes me sad. I am too lazy (and late) to make any kind of witty satirical comment.

Oh right, yeah. I updated Mikeynet again with Olly Enthuse, which I started to draw in Paint at work during lunch. I also did another belated episode of my still untitled comic in a pub last week as well. It's my intention to put something new up there every week (regardless of quality, since this has never bothered me before and I'm not about to start now).

Also I got rid of the ads on here. Nobody was clicking them.

super-ubuntu

I've just installed Kubuntu on my laptop, in a fit of righteous anger when I discovered my 'free' Windows Vista upgrade will cost me a fiver. Windows XP just seems to feel a bit... dated. And it is over 5 years old, so I suppose that's an explanation.

After a bit of configuring to get it to play MP3s and suchlike, it seems to be working fine. You should all give it a go. (Of course, really I want to install OSX, but apparently, that's kind of illegal)

Watching Adam out of the Adam and Joe Show's grisly [SPOILER REMOVED] in the new hit comedy Hot Fuzz reminded me that their show was funny. I found this on youtube:

Boredom Monster

I am supposed to be working but there is no work to do. This is Good. But also bad, because it means that I am BORED.

Do you know how bored I am? So bored that I downloaded MSPAINT from Microsoft.com, and drew a picture and pasted it onto a picture of where I work.

raaa!

Run away! He will eat your A-Levels!

Pole-tour 2

I decided that it was my duty as a European citizen and member of the human race to go to Auschwitz to remind myself how horrific people are, so I went there on Saturday. It was strange to a place where so many people had died; and yet I found it difficult to become emotionally affected by it. It all just seemed so out-of-context and unreal. Anyway, I think that merits its own post.

Later that evening we went to an American bookstore and cafe. It sounds rubbish, but actually it was amazing; it was like a decent sized second-hand bookshop full of english-language books about anything and everything, and lots of seats so you can have a cup of tea and read. They don't seem to mind if you just sit around reading, so loads of people do it. I've decided I'm going to open a bookshop/cafe/record shop when I'm older. It will be ace.

Also, I went to the salt mines! Apparently, in medieval Poland, salt was a Big Thing, like gold, only you can put it on your chips. Some princess from Hungary, set to marry a presumably well-bearded Polish King, decided that her dowry should be paid in salt not jewellary. She threw her engagement ring down a hole to symbolise this (don't ask me; this is what happened, ok?) and later some people were looking for it and found loads of salt! So now she is the patron saint of salt. or something. Look, anyway, all that matters is that there is now a mine there.

The salt miners got bored a lot and used to make sculptures, many of which are on display down there. They even carved out a number of chapels, one of which is really detailed and impressive. Apparently you can get married down there. They also used to have horses down there permanently, but they "didn't enjoy it" according to the guide.

There's a wicked lift up to the top as well. They cram you in like, er, miners.

Later in the evening I went to a slightly odd right-wing Polish nationalist/racist pub. According to Natalie, the patrons were talking about how those pesky Jews were taking over the world again. D'oh! I would normally have thought this was hilarious, but I had just been to Auschwitz, so instead I was just a little disturbed.

I nearly bought a postcard with John Paul II on from a little religious bookshop. They love him round here; he used to be Bishop of Krakow.

Pole-Fact - Good looking Kings on bank notes are not known as Zloty-hotties, but they should be.

Polo-diary 1

I am in Kracow at the moment.

Because I was overly frisked my the security man at Luton airport (do I look like a terrorist? Really? Stop touching my bottom! Why do i have to empty my pockets? In case I have paper weapons?) I had to run across the departure lounge to get to the plane. This was annoying. The plane journey was fun, because I was in the air. What is cooler than flying? Not much.

So, anyway, I got to Krakow where it was a bit chilly so I put a jumper on and met my friend Natalie. We had to wait for ages to get a train into town which was very annoying and made me cold.

I ate some Georgian food (which was interesting) and went to some weird Polish bars.

POLEFACT #1: I drink beer too quickly, apparently.

Next day I wandered around town. I walked around the park going round the centre of Krakow where the old wall was, amusingly called the Planty. Because it contains plants. It looks a bit like Half Life 2, only with less aliens. lots of annoying english tourists though. I don't like speaking english abroad, I think it's some kind of post-colonial guilt, even though Poland was never anywhere near any of the British empire. Hmm. I JUST DON'T KNOW.

POLEFACT #2: There are these weird tiled coal heaters in almost every room. They are astonishingly cool.

Then i went inside some old church which has one tower taller than the other. Legend has it that the builder of the shorter tower was so distraught that his tower was not as high that he hurled himself of it. If I was him, i would have knocked the top off the other tower. Or swapped them round in the night. There was some nice stained glass and paintings in there; but it was all very roman catholic so a bit weird. There are loads of really interesting old church buildings around the town - and there's nuns as well!

POLEFACT #3: The Polish President's twin brother is the Prime Minister. This is suspicious.

Next day I went to the castle. It's at the top of a hill, and you can see for miles. Of particular interest to me are the concrete bridges by the river. You have to wear plastic bags over your feet to look around the posh royal galleries - you learn this because a scary woman says "put on pleztek shuzz!" repeatedly until you do. Kings of Poland all lived in the castle in the past; they all had really impressive moustaches and beards which are now preserved on banknotes for the entertainment of the public.

Outside the castle is a dragon's cave; however the dragon sleeps during the winter and I was not allowed in.

Later in the evening I went to see Natalies exceptionally Eastern European flat and listened to freakish yet good lo-fi pop and discussed the rights and wrongs of robots, records and reality.

POLEFACT '4: The # key is in the wrong place.

Coming Soon: Hilarity at Auschwitz, and sodium madness down the Salt Mines!! Also, some photographs.
